PROJECT 2: Analysis

The program in Bordeaux House is simple. It divides human life into 3 categories. Necessity, Social, and Private. These categories are fitted into each floors. Thus, the house feels like 3 different world. This relates to Koolhaas’ idea of disconnectedness that with the invention of the elevator Koolhaas does not have to relate to each other. Human necessity are placed on the ground floor, Social roles are placed on the first floor, and the privacy, the most intimate area are put into the top floor.

This suggest that the ground and the first floor functions as a public area and the second floor functions as a private area.  Though on each floor there are heirarchy of privacy on each floor. As the area decreases, the space leans towards a private area rather than public.

An interesting part of the program is the addition of elevator. The elevator not only functions as an agent that separates the floors. It also allows the father, who is disabled to access the three segments.

The elevator adds a certain elements of theatricality into the house and the father is the main character. This is emphasized by Koolhaas by hiding all of the stairs, leaving only the elevator visible.
